Around Villers-le-Lac, you are right in the heart of the watchmaking Doubs region: deep valleys, very quiet roads, Franco-Swiss border crossings, scenic viewpoints… as well as true Jura terrain with some beautiful elevation gains.

Here are 3 varied routes (easy → challenging), all suitable for road cycling or smooth gravel riding:

The Saut du Doubs loop (the classic)

60 km — ~1,300 m elevation gain — intermediate level
THE iconic local ride. You follow the Doubs river basins, cross into Switzerland, climb onto the plateaus, and return via spectacular viewpoints.

Villers-le-Lac → Montbenoît → Pontarlier

80 km round trip — ~900 m elevation gain — accessible level
A route that follows part of the official Grande Traversée du Jura cycling trail.
Atmosphere: traditional Comtois farmhouses, open agricultural valleys, and heritage sites (Montbenoît Abbey). The route mainly follows very small roads and then a cycle path to Pontarlier.

The Doubs balconies → Goumois (the “pure Jura cycling” ride)

90 km — ~1,600 m elevation gain — advanced level
This section corresponds to another official stage of the GTJ cycling route, featuring wide Jura valleys, isolated farmhouses, views over the Franco-Swiss border, long flowing descents, and nearly deserted roads. The climb out of Goumois is about 8 km long, with breathtaking panoramas.
