Moûtiers

Come and visit the capital of the Tarentaise Valley!

Located in Savoie, at an altitude of 481 m, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Moûtiers is historically the capital of the Tarentaise Valley.

Its position between the Vanoise and Beaufortain mountain ranges limits the town’s expansion, with some buildings even constructed on the mountain slopes. This geographic location gives the town a lot of charm, especially in its historic center.

Known as Darentasia during the Gallo-Roman period, Moûtiers has preserved its medieval streets, its old bridge, the famous Saint-Pierre Cathedral built in the 11th century, pedestrian streets, and small shops with traditional façades. At the same time, the town embraces modernity with walls decorated with street art. A dedicated street art tour offers a unique way to explore the city.

During your visit, you’ll notice a mix of architectural eras, from the Middle Ages to the 19th and 20th centuries. Some old passageways, called barrioz, which once led down to the Isère River, can still be seen. Until the early 20th century, residents would draw water from the river for drinking and washing clothes.

Moûtiers’ history spans its role as a religious center, a hub for fairs, markets, and trade, and as a cosmopolitan town bridging rural mountain areas and urban spaces.

For those curious about traditional Savoyard tools—used in daily life, old professions, or in churches—the Museum of Popular Traditions is a must-visit.

Cheese lovers can explore the local dairy cooperative, where the secrets of Beaufort cheese production are revealed.
