In the village of Lescheraines, the Îles du Chéran leisure area is a perfect starting point for an outing with family or friends. There you will find designated swimming areas, a large lake, a natural beach, and spaces to relax or have a picnic after a day by the water.

Swimming is possible directly along the banks of the Chéran or in the nearby ponds, where the water is often cool and refreshing even in the height of summer. These areas enjoy a picturesque setting: green meadows, wooded riverbanks, and mountains in the background. For those looking for more activity, options such as kayaking, paddleboarding, or even pedal boat rentals are sometimes available near the main lake, adding a fun touch to the day.

Fishing: a rich and preserved river

Fishing is another very popular activity around the Chéran. The river and its surrounding bodies of water form a paradise for anglers, whether they are beginners or experienced. The area offers around 65 km of river fishing stretches, as well as several ponds classified in different fishing categories, where you can try your luck catching brown trout or other local species.

To fish in the Chéran or the surrounding ponds, a fishing permit is required. It can be purchased for a day or for the year from local tourist offices or sales points (such as tobacco shops or tourist offices in Lescheraines or Le Châtelard).

Fishing is often practiced with a strong respect for the environment: many stretches are managed under a “catch and release” system to protect fish populations and encourage biodiversity. It is an ideal activity for introducing children to fishing or simply enjoying a peaceful moment by the water, with only the sound of the current and birds in the background.

Gold panning: in search of gold flakes

Gold panning (the search for gold flakes) is an unusual and original activity that can be practiced on certain sections of the Chéran. This river is known for carrying small gold flakes resulting from the erosion of the crystalline rocks of the Bauges massif. These particles of alluvial gold can sometimes be found in the sands and gravel of the riverbed, particularly upstream of Alby-sur-Chéran or near certain sandy beaches and gravel banks.

Note: Gold panning in the Chéran is therefore more of an educational pastime or a fun activity than a productive gold hunt. It takes hours of patience to collect just a few flakes, but the experience of searching for the precious metal with a gold pan in the middle of Alpine nature remains unforgettable!

Walks and landscaped trails

For those who prefer walking in the heart of nature, the banks of the Chéran are lined with hiking trails ranging from easy strolls to more challenging routes that wind through forests, meadows, and riverbanks. One of the most popular routes is the Îles du Chéran Walk, starting from the Lescheraines leisure base.

This well-maintained and easy trail is perfect for a family outing accessible to everyone, including children, seniors, and even wheelchair users with assistance. It follows the river and passes a series of three small lakes in a green and peaceful setting.

The route is usually a loop of about 3 to 4 km (1.8 to 2.5 miles), with very little elevation gain (around 15 m / 50 ft), and generally takes between one and two hours to complete at a relaxed pace. Along the way, visitors can enjoy the refreshing murmur of the Chéran, watch anglers at work, breathe in the pure mountain air, and take in numerous views of the water and the surrounding alpine pastures.

The trail can also be extended or combined with longer routes, such as the Liberté Walk, which leads to the Pissieu Waterfall, offering a variation with more elevation and wilder landscapes.

Other hikes and discoveries

Beyond this friendly walk, many other hiking trails run through the surroundings of the Chéran, allowing visitors to explore the Bauges massif more deeply. These walks can lead to panoramic viewpoints, alpine ridges, or other remarkable natural sites such as gorges or high-altitude meadows.
