What to do in the Chéran river in Lescheraines?

In the village of Lescheraines, the Îles du Chéran leisure area is a perfect starting point for an outing with family or friends. There you will find designated swimming areas, a large lake, a natural beach, and spaces to relax or have a picnic after a day by the water.

Swimming is possible directly along the banks of the Chéran or in the nearby ponds, where the water is often cool and refreshing even in the height of summer. These areas enjoy a picturesque setting: green meadows, wooded riverbanks, and mountains in the background. For those looking for more activity, options such as kayaking, paddleboarding, or even pedal boat rentals are sometimes available near the main lake, adding a fun touch to the day.

Fishing: a rich and preserved river

Fishing is another very popular activity around the Chéran. The river and its surrounding bodies of water form a paradise for anglers, whether they are beginners or experienced. The area offers around 65 km of river fishing stretches, as well as several ponds classified in different fishing categories, where you can try your luck catching brown trout or other local species.

To fish in the Chéran or the surrounding ponds, a fishing permit is required. It can be purchased for a day or for the year from local tourist offices or sales points (such as tobacco shops or tourist offices in Lescheraines or Le Châtelard).

Fishing is often practiced with a strong respect for the environment: many stretches are managed under a “catch and release” system to protect fish populations and encourage biodiversity. It is an ideal activity for introducing children to fishing or simply enjoying a peaceful moment by the water, with only the sound of the current and birds in the background.

One of the most popular routes is the Îles du Chéran Walk, starting from the Lescheraines leisure base.

This well-maintained and easy trail is perfect for a family outing accessible to everyone, including children, seniors, and even wheelchair users with assistance. It follows the river and passes a series of three small lakes in a green and peaceful setting.

The route is usually a loop of about 3 to 4 km (1.8 to 2.5 miles), with very little elevation gain (around 15 m / 50 ft), and generally takes between one and two hours to complete at a relaxed pace. Along the way, visitors can enjoy the refreshing murmur of the Chéran, watch anglers at work, breathe in the pure mountain air, and take in numerous views of the water and the surrounding alpine pastures.

The trail can also be extended or combined with longer routes, such as the Liberté Walk, which leads to the Pissieu Waterfall, offering a variation with more elevation and wilder landscapes.
