Discover beautiful hikes between lake and mountains

Nestled at the crossroads of several mountains like the Bauges massif to the south, the Semnoz to the west, the Aravis massif to the east, and the Genevois hills to the north, Annecy is a perfect destination for hiking.

Around the lake and in the old town, there are also beautiful walks to enjoy on foot or by bike. Explore the historic center of “The Venice of the Alps” and let yourself be enchanted by its heritage and architectural treasures dating back to the Middle Ages.

For nature lovers, walks in the “Roc du Chère” and “Bout du Lac” nature reserves are unmissable. For hikes featuring stunning water spots, head to the wild Chéran river, the Crosagny ponds, and the Fier gorges.

Numerous trails weaving between lake, rivers, forests, plateaus, alpine pastures, and limestone peaks are accessible to all levels, whether for family strolls or alpine hikes. To add variety, you can choose themed hikes: botany, wildlife and flora, alpine life, stories and legends… In every case, you’ll enjoy exceptional panoramas, among the most beautiful in France.

Mount Veyrier: The first mountain on the east shore of the lake, reaching 1291m. Wander through the cool shade of the woods before reaching the breathtaking viewpoint at 1254m overlooking Lake Annecy, the Aravis mountain range, and Mont Blanc — elevation gain: 300m.

Semnoz Plateau: A wooded mountain except for its alpine meadow summit, it is Annecy’s green lung. It offers a 360° panorama of the lakes, the Mont Blanc massif, and the Bauges peaks — elevation gain: 700m.

Angon Waterfall: Be dazzled by the spectacular 60m high waterfall and enjoy stunning views of Duingt Castle and the lake from the trail — elevation gain: 250m.

Pedal Between Lake and Mountains

Located in Haute-Savoie, at the foot of the Bauges and Aravis mountain ranges, near the Col de la Tournette, Annecy is an ideal destination for cycling and mountain biking.

The city offers many facilities for cyclists, one of the most appreciated being “La Voie Verte”: the long bike path connecting Annecy to Ugine/Albertville. This 35km route provides breathtaking views of the mountains and the turquoise waters of the lake.

Using this bike path, you can cycle around the lake: an easy 45km loop with an elevation gain of 400m, allowing you to discover beautiful landscapes from each lakeside.

For more thrills and a wider panorama of Lake Annecy and the surrounding mountains, take the longer 60km loop via the Forclaz. This route is a bit more challenging with 700m of elevation gain, but it’s worth it for the fantastic viewpoint from the climb up the Col de la Forclaz. Don’t miss the stunning sunset overlooking the Annecy basin!

Speaking of cols, the Col des Glières, Col de Merdassier, and Col de Tamié are also must-do climbs. The Col des Glières is 75km with 1000m elevation gain, Col de Merdassier 74km with 1110m gain, and Col de Tamié 35km with 390m gain.

Dream of cycling the same routes as the Tour de France? The road up to Semnoz was the new final climb of the 2013 Tour de France! It’s a pleasant 55km ride with 1000m elevation gain. Alternatively, you can ride via the Col de la Colombière and cycle 120km following the legendary Tour de France route, with 1200m of elevation gain!

The famous bike path that lets you cycle all around Lake Annecy is just a few meters from Pré du Lac! Perfect for setting off right from the holiday village—everyone, saddle up!
