What to do in 3 days around Lake Serre-Ponçon?

Day 1 — Understanding the lake (heritage + landscapes)

Atmosphere: relaxed discovery

Morning: Historic Embrun

Notre-Dame-du-Réal Cathedral

market (Wednesday & Saturday)

This is the key to understanding why Embrun was the Alpine “capital” for centuries.

Lunch: Enjoy a terrace lunch (often possible even in October thanks to the sunshine).

Afternoon: The dam & the submerged history

Seasonal bonus: In autumn, the lake level is low, revealing almost lunar landscapes that are extremely photogenic.

Day 2 — Gentle nature & panoramas

Atmosphere: accessible hiking

Morning: Boscodon Abbey and forest, 15 minutes from Embrun.

Recommended easy hike: Pisse Waterfall (2-hour round trip), perfect for families.

Afternoon: The Demoiselles Coiffées at Théus or Pontis. A short path (30–60 minutes) leads to these spectacular fairy-chimney formations. Then:

Sporty option: rent an electric bike (e-bike) and ride a small section of the lake loop (magnificent outside the summer peak).

Day 3 — Mountain excursion

Atmosphere: wild Alps

Choose one of the two options:

Vauban fortifications (UNESCO site)
the Guil Gorges
the medieval village of Guillestre

Then relax in the Plan de Phazy hot springs (natural outdoor source at 26–28 °C) — perfect in the cool autumn air.
